What the game is about

The City of Zombies is a game for players from 10 Years old and above where all players cooperate to defeat the hordes of zombies spawning in the city. As they gather powerful items and weapons to erratic zombies they need to plan their moves to avoid being infected and turn into zombies themselves. The game is fast paced and features a final boss that requires all players to be vanquished and save the city!

Why we created this game

The City of Zombies was born as a fun uncle-nephew activity. Through a series of questions, Fabio helped Christian defining all the main game mechanics and concepts. A first prototype made of a large piece of paper, some paper cards and Lego characters was used for testing these concepts and mechanics and progressively refined to the current state of the game. So, yes, this may turn out to be the game with one of the youngest game designers ever.

We opted for a cooperative game, so that all the players have to team up against a common enemy, in this case the zombies and their boss. They either win all together through cooperation, or they lose all together and try again. Rather than stimulating competitive behavior, this game aims at building strategic tactics to reach a common goal, promoting teamwork.

The arrangement of walls and portals allow players to craft their adventures in the city. The game also offers different variants such as “Contagion” and “Unique characters” providing additional replayability in different scenarios.

Gameplay Highlights

Setup the game by placing the 4 starting and World boards all connected, with the starting ones facing up and the World ones facing down.

At each turn, a player moves by one square in any cardinal direction and assigns one Finding Card to one of the covered boards. When a player enters a board, finding cards content (either Zombies or Items) are assigned through a dice roll to a specific cell of the board.

When all players have moved, it’s the zombies turn to move on the board, their erratic movements can create chaos and player need to plan in advance how to get close enough to hit, without being knocked down or turn in to a zombie themselves.

By picking the right weapons for the right zombies, players can reduce their number before the zombie boss comes into the scene wrecking havoc on the city.

All players need to be able to hit the zombie boss at least once with the right weapon to defend the city from the zombie fury.

Some items that can be collected by exploring the city allow players to make special actions, like climbing walls or revive or cure knocked out players and zombiefied ones.

Development Stage

The game is currently under the second play-testing phase, which will include both guided and blind tests from both regular players and reviewers. Our current goal is to get a many feedbacks as possible so to polish any rough edges and bring the game to its best shape and form.

We have a couple of ideas on how we want the game to look, but the artwork is all to be defined and we are currently working on it.
