Spicify

Appetizer Edition

What the game is about

Spicify – Appetizer Edition is a milder version of Spicify, a perfect prequel so to say. It is designed specifically for group of friends, with challenges that won’t push you too far. Still a bit adventurous and flirty it keeps the original spirit of the classic edition, getting to know your friends better, and maybe yourself as well!

Why we created this game

Spicify had a nice success, more than we ever hoped to get from a game that we initially created just for ourselves and our friends. We are so happy and grateful for the thousands of players around the World that have decided to experience what it has to offer.

That said, for some players, it requires to make a leap longer than they would feel comfortable to attempt, Spicify Appetizer Edition is the perfect solution that we designed with the goal of keeping the same key concepts that make Spicify fun and unique as a party game, while allowing more players to play.

It is the perfect entry level to Spicify and can be played by any group of friends. The game is currently in play-testing phase, to address any shortcomings and get a feedback from as many people as possible, so you don’t have to take our word for it when we say it will bring a lot of fun into your game night.

Features and Components

Number of players: from 4 to 16
Average game duration: 45′ – 120′
Age: 18+

Components

  • 162 cards:
    For each team:
    • 26 unique Cold challenges and respective penalties
    • 26 unique Hot challenges and respective penalties
    • 26 unique Challenge modifiers
  • Shared among players:
    • 3 partner selection modifiers
    • 3 gender selection modifiers

Each challenge card defines:

  • The amount of points earned or lost by the player or the player’s team when accepted or refused
  • The challenge to face, specifying if it is to be played with a partner or not, and how the partner should be picked (randomly or chosen)
  • The penalty in case the player does not accept the challenge but would like to mitigate the number of points lost

Cold Challenges usually involve less physical contact and allow players to keep most of their clothes on.

Hot Challenges take the game to a whole new level, allowing players to explore further on, they are more intimate and less clothing is allowed.

The Challenge Modifiers cards expand both this and the classic version gameplay in two different ways:

  • Involving more players in different ways while the partners for the challenge face what the card describes
  • Changing the mood of the challenge with unique requests, like facing it “as if your grandmother was watching” increasing the replayability.

Reasons To Play

We recommend Spicify Appetizer Edition to every group of friends wishing to spend a light-hearted and fun night with a flirty vibe.

Gameplay Highlights

The rules are very similar to those of the classic version of Spicify.

Divide the players in two teams, preferably with an equal number of players from any gender, and assign to each team the respective set of cards. Decide whether to use both the Hot and Cold deck or either of those. We definitely recommend starting with the Cold one, to break the ice.

At each turn a player picks a card from the deck and decides whether to face the challenge (sometimes solo but often with your partner):

  • If the player accepts and the partner for the challenge does the same, they both earn points for their teams;
  • If only the player accepts (or it’s a challenge to be played solo) only the player earns points for his/her team;
  • If the player does not accept but is willing to face the penalty described in the card, the player team loses a small amount of points;
  • If the player neither accepts the challenge nor the penalty the player team loses a greater amount of points.

The 6 modifiers cards can be used in the game to override some aspects defined by the challenges, like how to pick the partner and what gender they may be, this latter part is not specified in the challenges of the Appetizer Edition.

When a card has been played, regardless of facing or not the challenge or the penalty, it is discarded from the game. The game ends when there are no more cards to draw: count the points scored by each team, the one who has the highest amount wins the game.

The main difference. gameplay-wise, are the Challenge Modifiers, which can be used in both the classic and Appetizer edition of Spicify.

When using these cards, the two teams have to be assigned their own deck of modifiers and at each turn, when playing a challenge, they need to either pick, or randomly draw, a modifier to use for the challenge they picked from the deck.
If they fail to use any modifiers from their deck, some points are deducted from their score.

Development Stage

The game is currently under the second play-testing phase, which will include both guided and blind tests from both regular players and reviewers. Our current goal is to get a many feedbacks as possible so to polish any rough edges and bring the game to its best shape and form.
